One of our Senior Women’s squad members went above and beyond our lockdown training program, undertaking a massive personal challenge and in support of an amazing cause at the same time!
Kat Salt our Novice Women’s Captain for the coming year decided to join in on the fundraising efforts by ‘Rowers for Black Lives Matter UK’. This was in the wake of the raised profile of the Black Lives Matter movement after events in the US. The five charities the funds raised would go towards are; Black Lives Matter UK Fund, Black Protest Legal Support UK, Stand Up to Racism, Love Rowing and The Gorse Boat Club.
Participants ran or erged as far as they could, and asked donors to pledge a certain amount of money per km. Kat set herself the massive challenge of erging for 351 minutes (5hrs 51mins)! At the time of her completing her fundraising, this stood for a minute for every black person shot by the police since 2019. She rowed an amazing distance of just over 70,000 km! The fundraiser ended up smashing the initial target of £2,000 – with the final amount raised being almost £7,000.
